The disastrous earthquake of 1693 spared the Gothic-Lombard church of S.Antonio da Padova, the 14th century church of the Madonna dei Miracoli al Cimitero, thr 16th century Sanctuary of Loreto, and a number of icons. Although the quake damaged the magnificent monuments in the city center, subsequent reconstruction was a boroche triumph for the Basilica of S.Sebastiano, the Piazza Duomo complex and Duomo trilateral, the Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul, the Palazzo di Città; the loggia of the Benedictine Monastery, and the neoclassical palazzo on Corso Umberto and Corso Savoia. But the whole city has intact forms of Sicilian baroque, in the houses, the lava portals with their sculpted gargoyles, and maze of streets.
