Mt. Aetna – eruption

Mt. Aetna – pine wood

The imposing form of Aetna rises up on the southern side of Sicily, where the Ionian Sea runs from the island’s lava cliffs to the Greek waters.Wherever you look, Aetna dominated the land around Acireale. The volcano has always inspired the imagination of men and fascinated poets, philosophers and travellers, and even todayouses the curiosity of modern visitors, who can climb up almost to the craters on its summit. To protect the woodlands and animals, the “Parco dell’Etna” was created: 59,000 mostly wooded hectares with special trails for hikers. Aetna is the Mediterranean’s “living mountain”. It has an extreaordinary variety of landscapes, from thousand year old black lava flows to the variegated colours of the woods on the blue sea. Its white snow is caressed by the sun.On the ski slopes at Linguaglossa and Nicolosi, skiers leave tracks in myth and nature. Aetna also symbolizes the myth of Polyphemus, Acis and Galatea.
